The Designer Everyone Should be Obsessed With

I don't just love every piece of everything Kate Spade creates. I love the attitude of the brand; its wit and playful sophistication are right up my alley -- her motto is, "She was quick, and curious, and playful, and strong." How awesome is that?

Recently, Kate came out with a inspiration-filled look book called 'Things We Love'. Have a peek, find out what intrigues these creatives behind the curtain, fall in love....

Everyone Needs to Have One of These

If I could, I would take up a whole wall in my house with this kind of chaotic inspiration board.

The Luxurious Apartment of Charlotte York

I'm a quintessential Sex & the City fan. I can't help it; Carrie is my favorite. However, even though I favor Carrie's style, attitude, and career, I also have a soft spot for Charlotte. I have an even bigger soft spot for Charlotte's apartment. So simple, impeccably luxe, and ultimately the most feminine pad out of all the girls. Ahh, it's real estate heaven.....

This is such a cutesy print; considering the holiday that is fast approaching! It is available for purchase here

"Meelaaaan dahling, Meelan"

Street-chic at it's very finest. This lovely lady from Milan chose to wear her buttoned up classic trench coat as the statement piece for her outfit. Side note: LOVE girls who have confidence to rock hair like that. Bravo.

Pasta With Tomato Cream Sauce

I've never met a carb I didn't like. It's a bit of a problem. I mean my tongue doesn't think so, but my behind does. Today I woke up craving a rich tomatoey pasta dish before I had even had breakfast. Do you think that's bad? That might be bad.

Don't care. Moving on.

This recipe is from one of my all time favorite foodie websites, The Pioneer Woman. Go check her out, she rocks. And so do her culinary concoctions.

Pasta with Tomato Cream Sauce

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter
  • 1 whole Medium Onion, Finely Diced
  • 4 cloves Garlic, Minced
  • 2 cans (15 Ounce Each) Tomato Sauce Or Marinara Sauce
  • Salt And Pepper, to taste
  • Dash Of Sugar (more To Taste)
  • 1 cup Heavy Cream
  • Grated Parmesan Or Romano Cheese, To Taste
  • Fresh Basil, Chopped
  • 1-½ pound Fettuccine

Preparation Instructions

Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain, reserving 1 cup of pasta water.
Heat butter and oil over medium heat. Add onions and garlic and saute for a minute or so. Pour in tomato sauce and add salt, pepper, and sugar to taste. Stir and cook over low heat for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Remove from heat and stir in cream. Add cheese to taste, then check seasonings. Stir in pasta and chopped basil and serve immediately. (Thin with pasta water before adding basil if needed.)

Try to Be Alive

“Try to learn to breathe deeply, really to taste food when you eat it, and when you sleep, really to sleep. Try as much as possible to be wholly alive, with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell, and when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough.”

The Color of 2011 is....

Did you all hear Pantone named 'Honeysuckle Pink' the color of the year? I can dig this, the color is happy, vibrant, and I'm a girl so it's built into my DNA or something to be drawn to this hue. A few tips on how to sartorially bring some Honeysuckle into your life:

DIY: A Fresh Take on Jewelry Displays

I have to admit, my jewelry is displayed in a very unartistic fashion; shoved into my drawer. Wouldn't an idea like this be a fun way to show off your collection of earrings and necklaces?
Apartment Therapy shows you how to create this expensive look that costs practically nothing, after the jump (plus it won't leave bark or other tree residue on your jewelry!)

What You Need:
1 long straight branch
Several smaller spindly branches
Hand-held pruners
Utility knife
Sand paper
Stain
Copper wire/sinew (pictured)
Clamps
Wood glue

Instructions
1. Start by pilfering a few long, straight branches which will form the base of the display, then locate a few spindly ones. The more twists and turns your sprigs sport, the more options for hanging jewels later. Here, Gadora repurposed a neighbor's discarded sage bush branches. Once a few select pieces were pulled into the shop, it took a few minutes to visually "set" them in place. Keep in mind: twigs that face up give more secure spots to hang your jewels and twigs that flow away from the wall allow easy-access to your new creation.

2. Remove the bark with a standard utility knife. The pruners make clipping unwanted sprigs a snap. The end of each branch was sanded to make a smooth end cap.

3. Once all branches were bark-free/knifed sufficiently, Gadora sanded each one to remove any knife marks, finishing with a smooth surface.

4. It's best to stain the pieces individually rather than wait until the jewelry display is put together. Two coats of stain were applied, and allowed to dry sufficiently between coats.

5. To ensure the horizontal offshoots fit snug against the vertical base twig, Gadora cut a small notch into the larger stick... leaving just enough room to snug the pieces together.

6. Working from the bottom up, Gadora wound copper wire around each glued "joint" to add security and visual interest. (Key to making it pretty: work your wire magic on two separate twigs, practicing the best way to wrap the wire around your branches).

7. Hang some jewerly and you're done!

How to Pull Off the Maxi-Skirt Trend This Spring Without Looking Like a Homeless Gypsy

Some of you are about to run away because you're thinking:

The maxi-skirt is not for me.
 I'm too short/curvy.
 The trend is too intimidating.
I just really HATE long skirts. Eww.

Crazy how I read your mind, huh? I can relate because until recently, I thought all four of the above statements. However, through some fashion research (which is wayy better than research for the paper I should have been writing -- don't worry mom I got it done) I discovered the floor length skirt actually has quite a dramatic and simple silhouette; it can transfer your most basic closet staples (lookin' at you white T & black leather coat!) into a supremely chic ensemble. This is sure to be a Spring/Summer 2011 staple.  If you're willing, use these tips as a little guidance for conquering this look.

"#1: Define that waist! There's one surefire way to look like a shapeless sack in a maxi skirt--by hiding your gorgeous figure under too much fabric. Adding a belt, like Olivia Palermo did with her motorcycle jacket/printed skirt combo, or as seen on a model from J. Crew's spring 2011 presentation, will give you a distinct silhouette and help emphasize the slimmest part of your body."

"#2: Show a little skin We're not saying you need to get all T&A extravaganza on us, but a little flash of flesh will keep your maxi skirt far from grandma territory. Opt for a deep-plunging v-neck, like on this model at MaxMara, or wear a sleeveless turtleneck to remind people that you've got a hot young bod under that super-long skirt."

"#3: Mind your proportions This one is especially helpful if you're not a supermodel--don't go big on the top and big on the bottom, because too much volume can give the appearance that you're bigger than you really are. If you've got some curves, flaunt 'em in a tucked-in fitted top; if you're keen on keeping your bum covered, go for a boyfriend blazer and cinch it around the middle."

And click here for another song from Adele's upcoming album '21' called "Turning Tables". Goosebumps.

These ACTUALLY Exist

These are straight out of a fairytale. I want one of Daniel Pouzet and Fred Frety's Nestrests and I want one NOW. This appears to be hanging at a vineyard. Curled up in one of these with a good book and glass of wine? I wouldn't HATE that...

"Nestrest is an over-sized bird’s nest offering us a secluded, suspended sanctuary and unusual meeting place: it’s the perfect place for relaxation, meditation and open-air conversations. The nest is made of super-strength Dedon fibers woven into a beautiful, yet sturdy hanging lounger pleasing to the eye and touch. The Nestrest can be customized as well: choose your own weave, fabrics (from polyester to leather), colors, and patterns to truly create an escape pod you'll never want to leave."

50 Years Ago Today...

50 years ago today, January 20, 1961, JFK delivered his inaugural address in Washington D.C.

To me it's so crazy looking at a photograph like this, a snap shot in time when not one person in this photograph has any idea as to what the future holds...

On a less depressing note, First Lady Kennedy looking effortlessly glamorous as always

It's the Little Things

Every single moment is undeniably beautiful;
believe in the small things.

How to be a 20-Something

A hilarious and well advised guide for how to be a 20-something. Some of these are really worth taking into consideration...

"Be really attractive. Your acne is gone, your face has matured without having wrinkles and everything on your body is lifted naturally. Eat bagels seven days a week, binge-drink and do drugs: you’ll still look like a babe. When you turn thirty, it’ll become a different story but that’s, like, not for a really long time.

Reestablish a relationship with your parents. You don’t live with them anymore (hopefully) so start to appreciate them as human beings with thoughts, flaws and feelings rather than soulless life ruiners who won’t let you borrow their car.
Go from eating delicious food at your parents’ house to eating Ragu tomato sauce over Barilla noodles. Develop an eating disorder to save money.
Move into an apartment on the corner of Overpriced and Dangerous. Sleep on a bare mattress with an Ikea comforter. Your mother talks to you about buying a top sheet and a duvet cover but feel like you’re not mature enough to own something called “duvet.”
Read the New York Times piece, “What Is It About 20-Somethings?” Feel exposed and humiliated. Share it on your Facebook with the caption: “Um….” Your friends will comment “Too real” and that will be the end of that.
Work at a coffee shop but feel hopeful about your career in advertising, writing, whatever. Remember that you’re young and that the world is your oyster. Everything is possible, you still have so much to see and hear. You went to a good school and did good things. Figure if you’re not going to be successful, who the hell is?
Date people who you know you'll never be able to love. See someone for three months for no other reason than because it’s winter and you want to keep warm by holding another body. Date a Republican just so you can say you dated a Republican.
Eventually all these nobodies will make you crave a somebody. Have a real relationship with someone. Go on vacations together, exchange house keys, cry in their arms after a demoralizing day at work. Think about marrying them and maybe even get engaged. Regardless of the outcome, feel proud of yourself for being able to love someone in a healthy way.
Start your twenties with a lot of friends and leave with a few good ones. What happened? People faded away into their careers and relationships. Fights were had and never resolved. Shit happens.
Think of yourself at twenty and hanging out with people who didn’t mean a thing to you. Think about writing papers, about being promiscuous, about trying new things. Think of yourself now and your face looking different and your body feeling different and how everything is just different.
Form the habits that will stick with you forever. Drink your coffee with two sugars and skim milk every morning. Buy a magazine every Friday. Enjoy spending money on candles, smoke pot on Saturdays, watch the television before bed.
Move into a bigger apartment on the corner of Mature and Gentrification and finally buy a duvet cover. Limit your drug-use. If you find yourself unable to do so, start to wonder if you have a problem.
Have your parents come to your place for Christmas. Set the table, make the ham, wear a sophisticated outfit, This will all mean so much at the time.
Think about having children when you stop acting like a child. This may not ever happen.
Maybe this is assuming too much. Maybe this is generalizing. Maybe society uses age as an unrealistic marker for growth. Maybe. Still feel the anxiety on your 30th birthday and think to yourself, 'Oh shit, I’m no longer a 20-something.'"

Spring's Hottest Lip Color

Tangerine was the popular lip hue seen on numerous Spring/Summer '11 runways this past winter. Bright lips may seem like an intimidating trend to pull off, but it can work for anyone; it's all about coordinating the color with your skin tone. A little confidence doesn't hurt either.

If you have a rather fair skin tone like Chloe Sevigny, you can pull off a brighter and bolder color. Try M.A.C.'s Morange Lipstick

For a sheer and shiny tone like Liv's try NARS Capucine Lip Lacquer

Olive skin tones look best with a peachy shade, and her metallic eye is a great compliment! For a similar look try Clinique's Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Balm in Mega Melon.
